'I must admit that this piece now ranks amoungst my all time favourites! As I usually do with my research, I spent a lot of time observing the orangs together. This mother and baby were enjoying each other's company, playing together and showing great affection towards one another.
They are so beautiful and such sensitive creatures. Like lots of people, I find them incredibly captivating. I enjoyed the challenge of drawing their hair and doing it justice. It appears so silky and flowing on the mother whilst the baby's is so soft and fluffy. I think that the scene shows the grace, humour and gentle nature of the orangs.
I particularly loved the little one's expression as he was studying the twig intently. His ever-patient mother watched him go through the learning curve - something that I can relate to enormously, hence the title!' Karen Phillips
