Karen's Inspiration
'In the ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ piece featuring a group of Humboldt Penguins on the waters edge, I wanted to capture the social interaction occurring within the group. They are really very interesting to watch. Rather like other flocks of birds and groups of animals they wait until one decides to go, then the rest of the group follow.
Penguins always seem to capture people’s imaginations, perhaps because they can appear rather humorous and thus endearing. Their colouring also lends itself very well to graphite work, making the piece striking in black and white. I enjoyed drawing this piece very much.' Karen Phillips
